Hallelujah. The Yamaha MT-07 is proof you don’t need big power, expensive suspension or fussy electronics to have fun. The Yamaha doesn’t have traction control, variable power maps or a ride-by-wire throttle and you know what? It’s all the better for it. This is a simple motorcycle. It’s an inspired machine, designed cleverly and built impeccably. It’s one of a rare breed of machine in any class that mixes lightness with an easy to manage engine, making it smooth, fun and easy to ride. hat a surprise the MT-07 is. It’s light, friendly, punchy, fast, frugal and more fun than it has a right to be. We reckon for everyday use and shorter-distance riding it’s actually better than the bigger, more expensive MT09. It’s such a superb performer and well built, the MT-07 would still knock us sideways if it was a couple of grand more expensive. And all this from a manufacturer that almost priced its products out of the market just a few years previous…Weighing just 179kg fuelled and ready to go, it’s hard to believe the MT-07 has a lower-cost steel frame and swingarm, rather than aluminium.

That lack of weight makes the Yamaha easy to manage at low speed, maximizes braking performance, improves agility on the move and generally makes the MT-07 simple to ride, especially when matched to such a friendly engine. The rear suspension is bolted to the back of the engine, leaving the frame to be made as simple and light as possible. The MT-07 has 49/51 front/rear weight distribution, 25mm lower centre of gravity than the XJ6 and a 400mm shorter wheelbase. The lower mass helps fuel economy, too, so despite having a 14-litre tank, Yamaha claims 370km between filling stations. And you’ll be comfortable for all those kms, too. The riding position is natural, the bars are an easy reach and the foot pegs don’t hurt knees. The MT-07’s engine is all about smooth, easy power and torque, It has a 270° crankshaft to give it feel of a V-twin, a lightweight balance shaft for smoothness and an off-set cylinder design for less internal friction, more power and improved fuel economy. It’s 7kg lighter than Yamaha’s inline four-cylinder XJ6 motor. But here’s the amazing thing, crack the throttle and the MT-07 will wheelie up in second gear, the smooth throttle response being so predictable you can then leave the front hanging up in the air for as long as you want. LAMS versions are restricted to around 50hp and can still manage 170kmh with full power version producing 50% more power and a top speed in excess of 200kmh.
